About the book
Titled after the mining technique in which gold is extracted using a pan, and the cinematographic (or photographic) technique of swivelling a camera to keep an object in the frame, “Panning” is a photo-essay on Seoul’s pavement written by the artist Ciel who walked, observed and recorded the city’s built environment. The 25 photos and accompanying text of the book treat Seoul’s pavements, which are in constant transformation as they respond to that of the city, as living surfaces. The book explores the visual beauty of these surfaces through non-objective compositions, while also documenting the process through which the urban environment is shaped by the interactions of urban planning, public engagement, and climate.
About the author
Ciel is a Seoul-based visual artist and photographer from Detroit. Their photographic, painting and assemblage works record and recompose real environments, exploring the layered connections between place, the built environment, natural systems, civic life, and material histories.
